ATD Central Iowa Board of Directors

The ATD Central Iowa chapter is governed by volunteer leaders who represent aspects of workplace talent development.  These leaders utilize their talents to plan, administer, and implement the policies, programs, and vision of the chapter.  Through their guidance, the chapter serves the educational and professional development needs of our members.  The leadership follows chapter bylaws which provide direction on how the chapter should operate.  To read the bylaws and annual report, please scroll to the bottom of the page.
Executive Board
The Executive Board manages the day-to-day activities of the Chapter.  Each year members elect a President, President-Elect and Vice-Presidents to guide the activities, services, and business of the chapter.  The Executive Board is responsible for establishing and implementing goals based on the Chapter's Strategic Plan. The President, President-Elect and Vice Presidents meet monthly to respond to member needs and fulfill the vision of ATD through visibility in the community and our profession. Our membership is welcome to these meetings!

President- Bryan Martin    (Click here to email)    

  Bryan has 10+ years of Human Resources experience in the Financial Services, Insurance, Healthcare and Small & Medium Sized Business Solutions industries representing and specializing in Talent Acquisition, Talent Management, and Training/Learning & Organizational Development. Bryan is a passionate business partner who thrives off of delivering consultative business solutions and full life cycle Human Resources strategies. Bryan prides himself on staying actively engaged within our community. He's an Adjunct Instru ctor at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) teaching HR Management, Job Readiness: Resume & Interviewing Skills, and Insurance 101 courses. An avid Tigers fan, Bryan’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts: Psychology in Communications from Louisiana State University – Geaux Tigers! - And a Masters of Arts: Teaching & Learning – Human Resources Development from Ashford University.


President-Elect - Brooke Jeffus (Click here to email)        

  Brooke Jeffus is a Virtual Sales Manager - Independent Channel at Nationwide Insurance.  She has worked for Nationwide since May 2009.  During her time at Nationwide she has held a variety of roles, including Retention Agent, Trainer, Senior Trainer, Training Specialist, and Sales/Retention Supervisor (prior to her current role).  Brooke graduated with her Bachelor’s in Marketing from Iowa State University and graduated with her Master’s in Organizational Management (Leadership focus) from Ashford University in 2013.  Brooke holds the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) designation through the Association for Talent Development (ATD) and is certified to facilitate asynchronous (virtual) learning through ATD as well.  Brooke has served on the ATD Central Iowa Board of Directors (past VP of Electronic Media) since 2014.  Outside of work Brooke enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, and spoiling her puppy.
VP Community Relations - Erin Gangestad - (Click here to email)     

  Erin is a Learning and Performance Specialist with Nationwide Insurance. She has worked for Nationwide since 2005 and has spent over 10 years in a training role while at Nationwide. Erin graduated in 2004 from Iowa State University with an undergrad degree of Family and Consumer Sciences Education. Erin is a creative, self-motivated learning and performance professional with strong skills in: facilitation, curriculum design, computer based training development, and assessment writing. She has the ability to bring innovative ideas to help increase transfer of learning from the training room to the job, as well as build connections between departments. In her spare time Erin likes to spend time with her husband, Brent, spoiling her nieces and nephews, refurbishing furniture, interior decorating, cooking, and crafting. She can also be found outside of work spending quality time with her family, traveling, and cheering on the Cyclones.


VP Community Relations- Carol Kristensen - (Click here to email)          

  A Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP), Carol also has a Masters degree in HR/Training & Development (The Wichita State University) and a Bachelors degree in Journalism and Mass Communication (Iowa State University). She’s had the privilege of working in a variety of industries for some great companies like Boeing Aircraft, PepsiCo/Pizza Hut, Meredith Publishing, and Wells Fargo, then owned her own business before joining Nationwide. Over the years, she has been blessed with some recognition, including a SHRM award for outstanding graduate research on training evaluation; ASTD awards, including Trainer of the Year; Golden Globe awards for training videos; and a Presidential citation for excellence for a drug awareness training program. But the most rewarding part of her job is when participants get excited about learning something new and useful, and leaders thank her for making a difference. Carol and her husband Tom live in Ankeny. They have two grown children. Stephanie is a high school math teacher. She and her husband Tyler live in Blaine, MN. Matt is an Engineer with John Deere. He and his wife Ashton also live in Ankeny. Carol likes to read, play golf, walk the dogs, go out with friends, dabble in photography, and sing in the church choir.
VP Education - Stacy Alexander - (Click here to email)    
 Stacy Alexander is a Senior Trainer for the Nationwide Academy at Nationwide Insurance.  She started her career at Nationwide in February 2008 and has been part of the learning & performance department since December 2008.  Stacy graduated with a Bachelor's in Marketing & Finance from Cedarville University.  Her primary responsibilities include virtual training for the direct channel at Nationwide and helping advance strategic initiatives like third party training.  She has a passion to help others learn & watch them develop into more confident individuals.  Stacy completed the Facilitating Synchronous Learning Certificate Program through ATD in 2014.  She has been a member of ATD Central Iowa since 2009 and was a member of the education committee in 2014 prior to joining the board in 2015.  Outside of work, Stacy enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling to new places, and spending summers on the lake. 
VP Education - Chris Mason - (Click here to email)  
 Chris Mason is a professional with 17 years of experience working in adult higher education and talent development.  Throughout his career, Chris has maintained an unwavering passion for helping individuals and teams exceed performance expectations, demonstrating a sustained ability to generate residual value through a customer centric approach.  He takes a holistic approach to bridging together individual, organizational and community success for the benefit of all parties involved. In Chris’s current role as Talent Development Business Partner for Merit Resources, he specializes in instructional design and curriculum development as well as training delivery and facilitation for Merit’s small and medium sized business clients.  Chris holds a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix (2001).
VP Members and Ambassadors - Mark McConnell - (Click here to email)       
  Mark McConnell is a Training & Development Specialist for Vermeer University, the talent development arm of Vermeer Corporation in Pella, IA.   In his role Mark serves as the lead administrator for the organization’s enterprise learning management system, oversees state grant funding for new jobs training, acts as coordinator for the company’s engineering development program, and facilitates classroom sessions focusing on performance management.   Mark earned his B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Northern Iowa and holds a graduate degree in Historical Studies from Reformed Theological Seminary.  Recently, Mark earned a certificate in Integrated Talent Management from ATD.   Outside of work Mark enjoys spending time with his wife and two young sons, as well as fly fishing the trout streams of northeast Iowa.

Brian is the Senior Training Generalist for Kemin Industries. He has worked for Kemin since December 2011, but he has been in L&D for 20 years, having worked in the private and public sectors. Brian received his Master's Degree from Drake University in Adult Learning & Organizational Performance with focuses in leadership and training. Brian graduated with his undergrad from Iowa State University in political science. Brian's current projects take him around the world , focusing on Kemin's philosophy of servant leadership as well as Kemin's strategic sales leadership program.  Kemin also loans Brian out the the United Nations World Food Programme each year to facilitate a three-day summit meeting on food quality and safety and supply line management. In his spare time, Brian enjoys spending time with his wife, Kristina, and his two boys, Cameron and Calvin.


VP Electronic Media - Sarah Onnen - (Click here to email)
  Sarah has extensive experience in talent development which includes roles in training, curriculum design, and learning solution development. She has been making a daily impact within the Nationwide Insurance family since 2006 where she is currently working as a Learning and Performance Consultant in agribusiness, designing online training for underwriting staff. She says the best part of her job is the opportunity to teach so many different associates the skills that will be vital in their professional journey, whether it is in person or online. Outside of work, Sarah enjoys spending time with husband, Corey, and children, Oliver and Lucy. She is a graduate of Grand View University and holds a Bachelors in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources. Sarah is a fan of rock and roll, enjoys going to concerts, and loves to travel.
